Accomplishments: Served on first CASI Board / Designed CASI Pepper TICC trophy.
Vann York once said, “I want people to know damned little about me”,
however he did much for the CASI organization for which he should be
honored. The late Ray King stated, “If it had not been for Vann York, I would
not have started cooking chili.” Vann was and is a large part of chili history as
evidenced by all the “1st” attributed to him.
Vann was a member of the 1st CASI Board and served as Director for 7
years functioning in the positions of President, Vice President and Good Will
Ambassador. He was also on the CASI Board of Governors. Vann was
elected as an Old 320 Alcalde.
He, along with Richard Knight, was appointed in 1978 as one of the 1st
CASI Referees and served as South Texas Regional Referee from 1980-1983.
He created the “world in a chili” trophies that are awarded today at TICC
and formed the SOTOL Pod serving as its 1st Great Pepper. Vann was
inducted into the Houston Pod’s Chili Hall of Flame in 1981.
When retirement came, Vann headed for Terlingua and resided there until
his death on Christmas Day in 1997.
